Two-thirds of Americans think nanotechnology is morally unacceptable -- wait, what?

What the fuck? What could people possibly object to about nanotechnology? I really can't find any good reason to object to it at all, but I certainly don't see any moral dilemma. Surely this must be a flawed poll somehow. I don't have a lot of faith in the intelligence of people as a whole, but I can't really believe that people are stupid enough to have a moral objection to nanotechnology. I'm going to instead assume that they just have no idea what nanotechnology is and just figured that if someone was asking them if they had a problem with it that there must be something to object to.

There are some environmental/technical concerns with some aspects of nanotechnology. The one I am most familiar with is that as particles get very small, the surface effects start to become much more important than bulk effect which can lead to deleterious results.

Still, I would think your conclusion is valid that the respondents have no clue what nanotechnology even is.

Sure, I think concerns are natural, but morally unacceptable? How did this nation's anti-science bias get so bad? I don't think it used to be this way.

People don't understand what science even is. I think that's the problem. Made much worse when we pretend that science isn't important.

And having influential people such as Pope Benedict come out against science (hello - Middle Ages again, people?) doesn't help.

'shift again. I suspect that most people in the poll know nothing of nanotech that they didn't get from SciFi and horror movies.

People are always anti-something, and even if they are not sure what it is, they are pretty sure they are anti-it.
