...responding to something disgusting by saying that you threw up in your mouth a little bit. This has been bothering me for some time now, but I am now officially very tired of it. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Is it the phrase "I threw up in my mouth a little bit" or just the gist of the phrase in general?
I use the phrase all the time because I like it and it shows a sense of disgust while at the same time showing a sense of restraint and respect to those around the disgusted person.
Is it overused? I would have to say yes. Will I stop using it? Probably not, but only because I am not creative enough to come up with something else. Any ideas?
I concur. What happened to "gross" or "yuck" for starters? One of the many linguistic problems of living in a hyper-real culture is "velocity." If someone relates an unpleasant story/idea/image to you and your immediate reaction is "I just threw....", what will be your subsequent reaction if the story/idea/image escalates to a new level of gross? My entire digestive system is fleeing my body?

Okay, so, I have no idea what that means, but I think I get the point. I will refrain from using ultra-descriptive terms such as "I threw up in my mouth" and "i shit myself" and instead use generic, boring and less descriptive terms such as "eww", "gross" and "that's nasty" (family guy style).
I blame the movie Dodgeball and Ben Stiller's hot wife for making this phrase popular. The bit from that movie where she references vomitting in her mouth was in all of the commercials for the theatrical release and the dvd release.
I don't know if I agree with using The Fixer's idea, because I normally associated shitting oneself with being (a)really happy or (b) really scared...
Who has been saying that? Someone in the blog community or IRL?

It's just the gist of it. As for alternatives, I think at this point, we're going with fixer's idea.

ReplyDeleteIt's kind of a combination of ewwwww and ugh which ends up sounding like yewg. Very handy for the confrontation of gross things, I must say.
