Google Launches IM

Oh, great, just what we need another IM client. There aren't enough of those out there already. Wake me up when somoene gets all these companies together and makes them realize that people would be a lot happier if they didn't need to sign on to 12 different accounts to talk to different people. I guess because they're free, we're supposed to overlook such enormous flaws. We certainly wouldn't stand for it if people using Comcast phone service couldn't call people using BellSouth. Anyway, it also seems that Google's IM client lacks a lot of features that the other ones have had for a long time, so I don't see the appeal.

I almost never use email. Except at work. And for the IM things I use Trillian, but you can't use that for Google, so if I need to talk to anyone who has that I'll probably get GAIM and I can set them all up on that.

According to the articles I've read, Trillian will work with Google.

i disagree; i think another IM client is fine. first, google tends to do cool things (eg, maps.google.com), and it will be interesting to watch what they do with this.

second, google states they are working with anyone who provides an interface to their IM system (i know, any entrant would do the same, but still...)

and finally, i am so tired of all the ad viruses that come courtesy of premier IM, aol (not me, my kids!). i've told my kids to please start using something else, yahoo or google; but they're teenagers (i wonder if they heard me)

But so far Google's IM doesn't look very good, and doesn't seem to offere anything new, it just makes another service that does the same things. As for the ads and stuff with AIM, you can use Trillian to eliminate that stuff.
