:-) vs :)

Apparently the original emoticon - :-) turns 25 today. Nothing special about the article, but I did find it a little odd that nowhere does it mention that the mainstream smiley these days doesn't have a hyphen.

I always use the hyphen. I'm Old School.

What's "- :-)"? Smiling unicorn?

You know who I bet loves emoticons more than anyone? John.

I'm with John on the LOL crap.

Emoticons are a necessary evil to convey the fact that I'm joking, and not seriously ripping someone a new one. Also handy when cracking wise and/or possibly crossing a line with somebody online whom you've never actually met. Ya know, like all of you guys!

I do use them in work emails, but not the super official ones to bigwigs.

I like Japanese style emoticons, my favourites being the wink ^_~ and the blush *^_^*. Cute.

I've seen the blush but not the wink. They do look very Japanese for some reason. I think I'll start using the winks in my responses to John, He'll love that ^_~ (ok, having typed that out now, it's a lot more effort than the standard wink ;) )
