Senators seek Web porn tax
When are legislators going to move into the 21st century with the rest of us and understand how the internet works? There is plenty of stuff on the internet that is inappropriate for children and there always will be, and not all of it is porn. Taxing porn will not do anything to make it less likely that children will see porn on the internet. There is plenty of free porn, so I don't think you can really effectively tax that. And there will also always be people who don't know and/or don't follow the law. The way to keep your kids from seeing something inappropriate online is to set up software to block inappropriate sites and monitor where they go, and to talk to them and know what the fuck they are doing whether online or off. Because let's face it, if your kids are corrupted by internet porn, does it really make a difference ifthey're corrupted by legal internet porn or illegal internet porn?
Let's have the government stop trying to parent everyone's kids for them, and instead encourage the parents to do it for themselves. Also, whether you like porn or not, it's a legal and lots of people do seem to like it (or it wouldn't be so easy to find in the first place) and punishing law abiding (if horny) citizens because other people are too lazy to be parents to their children seems like overdoing it to me.

The 'morality' argument is to get all the wingnuts on board. The internet porn industry nets $4 billion a year in profits. That's why it's so easy to find and that's the real reason they want to tax it. It's a cash cow if the government could tap into it. But, as you said, congress has no idea of what the internet really is or how it works. I doubt this will ever come to pass.
(loud applause) Porn is an easy target because so many people are too worried about how people might perceive them to speak out against this type of effort. That $4 billion the fixer references isn't generated by 13 weirdo/hermits in dark studio apartments, and considering how easy it is to access a lot of internet porn for free--or so I hear, ahem--there are a TON of people paying a lot of cash to get off online.
